Cabinet approves establishment of new AIIMS at Darbhanga, Bihar

The establishment of a new Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga, Bihar was approved by The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The establishment of a new AIIMS under the aegis of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The total cost will be Rs. 1264 crore and is expected to be completed within 48 months from the date of Indian government approval. The Cabinet also approved the creation of a director post with the base salary of 2.25,000 rupees (fixed) plus the NPA (but the salary + non-productive assets (NPA) would not exceed 2.37,500 rupees. ) for AIIMS above.

Highlights:

  • As per the approval, the new AIIMS will involve the establishment of a hospital, residential complex and related facilities/services, teaching block for medical and nursing courses, broadly on the model of AIIMS, New Delhi and six other new AIIMS monitored under phase I of PMSSY.
  • The main objective is to establish the new AIIMS as an institution of national significance to provide quality tertiary health care, medical education, nursing training, and research in the region.
  • As per the approval, the new AIIMS will add 100 UG (MBBS) and 60 B.Sc (nursing) seats
  • The new AIIMS will have 15 to 20 super-specialized departments
  • The new AIIMS will add 750 hospital beds
  • Based on data from the current functional AIIMS, each new AIIMS is expected to address approximately 2,000 OPD patients per day and approximately 1,000 IPD patients per month.
  • The PG and DM / M.Ch super-specialty courses will also be launched in due course
