Inland Waterways to be open between India-Bangladesh 

  • India, and Bangladesh will open a new inland waterway from 3rd September 2020. This is based on the agreement signed by the countries in May 2020 on Inland Water Transit and Trade. The number of Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) routes were increased from eight to ten.
  • Social Justice Ministry to launch Mental Rehabilitation Health line On 27th August 2020, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will launch a mental health rehabilitation center through video conference. The helpline number “1800-599-0019” will help in providing psychological support, psychological crisis management, early screening, mental wellbeing, first-aid and will also help to prevent deviant behavior. The initiative targets people experiencing depression, anxiety, traumatic stress disorder, panic attack, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, and mental health emergency.
  • NITI Aayog released Export Preparedness Index, 2020 On 26th August 2020, the NITI Aayog released the Export Preparedness Index (EPI). The think tank was partnered by the Institute of Competitiveness. Gujarat has topped the index followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. This is mainly because of its location near the coast. The other three coastal states that featured in the top ten rankings are Kerela, Odisha, and Karnataka. Among the landlocked states, Rajasthan was the top performer followed by Telangana and Haryana. In the category of Himalayan states, Uttarakhand topped the list followed by Tripura and Himachal Pradesh.
  • BRICS Industry Ministers Video Meeting in 5G and AI The Industrial Minister of BRICS countries attended video meetings on 5G, industrial internet, and Artificial Intelligence. During the meet, China urged the BRICS countries to strengthen cooperation on digital transformation. China also highlighted that BRICS countries should cooperate to promote the economic survey, resume work and production, guarantee medical supplies, and promote economic development. According to the BRICS leaders, there is a need for enhancing and strengthening the supply chain and abilities of the countries to create a good development environment.
  • Africa free of Wild Polio declared by WHO On 25th August 2020, the World Health Organization declared Africa Polio-Free. The disease is now found only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria is the last African Country to be declared free from wild polio. More than 95% of Africa’s Population has now been immunized. This was the major condition set by the Regional Certification Commission to declare Africa Polio Free. Polio Virus spreads from person to person through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system and lead to paralysis.
  • For Kashmir Saffron, E-Auction Portal launched In order to promote the trading of GI-tagged Kashmir Saffron, the Department of Agriculture operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare has created an e-auction portal in collaboration with NSE-IT. The Department has created the portal under the aegis of India International Kashmir Saffron Trading Centre. The main aim of the portal is to make sure the buyers have quality access to Kashmir Saffron. The portal will help in hassle-free e-trading between the registered growers and buyers.
  • AFSPA extended for six more months in Assam The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 is to be extended for six more months in the state of Assam. The recent insurgent attacks on security forces are the main reason for AFSPA being extended in the state. Several illegal arms and ammunition have been recovered from many places in the state. The Act gives special powers to the armed forces to maintain public order in “disturbed areas”.
  • Illegal Beneficiaries of PM-KISAN to be identified by GoI On 26th August 2020, the Government of India announced that it is to track the illegal beneficiaries of the PM-KISAN scheme. The Ministry of Agriculture is to carry out the process. The Agriculture Ministry is to obtain the data of central and state government employees from the Ministry of Finance. The data is to be matched with the data with the PM-KISAN list of beneficiaries. Similarly, the data is to be checked with the income tax department as well. The Agriculture Ministry will check if any of the beneficiaries of the PM-KISAN scheme are income-tax payers.
  • “Char Dham Pariyojana has caused long term damage” On 26th August 2020, the High-Powered Committee appointed by Supreme Court has asked the Environment Ministry to take strict actions against the violation of forest and wildlife laws by “Char Dham Pariyojana”. The committee has said that the project has caused incalculable and long-term damages to Himalayan Ecology. The Char Dham Pariyojana aims to connect major pilgrimage sites. The committee has submitted two reports on the project.
  • Indian Table Tennis Star Poulomi Ghatak retires On 24th August 2020, the table tennis star Poulomi Ghatak retired quietly. She had represented India at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and Common Wealth Championships between 2000 and 2008. She entered the Olympics in Sydney for the first time when she was 16. Poulomi has now joined her husband Soumyadip Roy to coach younger players at their academy that was inaugurated in June 2019.
